Since 2003, the Convocation has been an annual event that compliments Texas Tech University System's official graduation ceremonies held at the United Supermarkets Arena. The Convocation provides a more intimate occasion for families to honor their Texas Tech graduates. The event welcomes the attendance of any upcoming Texas Tech graduate who would like to participate. From 2003 to 2010, the Graduation Convocation was held in May. In 2011, festivities expanded to twice a year, with the second ceremony taking place in the fall to honor winter graduates.
At the event, participants receive a complimentary cultural stole during the individual recognition portion of the program. As an added honor, graduates may also wear their cultural stole during their official Texas Tech graduation ceremony, along with their college, honors, or academic achievement stoles.
The Convocation has been hosted in a number of locations on campus and in the Lubbock community, but since May 2025, it has been hosted at the Overton Hotel & Conference Center, a venue located directly across the street from Texas Tech University and Jones AT&T Stadium.
In its infancy, the first Graduation Convocation featured 25 graduates and their families, bringing together just under 100 attendees for the celebration. Over time, the annual event has grown steadily and now brings together close to 500 graduates between the spring and fall ceremonies, with another 1,000+ family members sitting in the audience to cheer on their honorees.
Raiders Rojos estimates that it has honored over 10,000 graduates - and counting - since its first event in 2003, and has had over 20,000 family members show up to cheer on their graduates and loved ones.

Distinguished Alumni Family Award
Since 2006, Raiders Rojos has recognized the accomplishments of alumni families with honorees being required to have at least two generations of Texas Tech graduates, with some of the most recent families now boasting three. Honorees are also selected based on the family’s contributions towards promoting higher education in their communities. For the honor, nominations are solicited each spring, and recipients are recognized with a bronze paver (pictured below) placed in the McKenzie Merket Alumni courtyard.
